LACNIC giving out large blocks as split blocks

An interesting thing appeared on LACNIC’s  page today (which you can find here) – a couple of “lucky” LIRs in Mexico and Brazil got allocated split (large) blocks of addresses.

Example number one was ticket number 459 (MX) was allocated 2 x /16, 3 x /17 and 2 x/18 in one go.  As that basically adds up to a /14, that’s presumably what they asked for as a contiguous block, and didn’t get.

Example number two was ticket number #6012-ADD (BR), which was allocated a /13, a /14, and 4 x/16, for a total of /12 if it was contiguous.

The fact that large blocks such as that are now being allocated as split definitely says to me that the bottom of the barrel is what we’re going to be staring at very soon.  Watch this space …

At the time of writing, LACNIC have 0.413 /8s left, which means we’re only 0.163 /8s from LACNIC’s definition of “exhausted”.
